Power dressing

I know I’m not on my own when I say, the concept of dressing for work has changed.
Once upon a time, it was all about power dressing. Women asserting their authority in, what was essentially, a “man’s world”. Shoulder pads, blazers and the crispest white shirts. Anything you can do, I can do too.

Let’s not dispute the fact, we’re still far from where we need to be when it comes to gender equality – but I do feel like, this year dressing for the office has taken on a completely new meaning for me.

We’re busy – travelling, building businesses, doing our thing. Making our way through the crowds in a pant suit and shoulder pads is no longer a feasible option. We need clothes we can move in, clothes we can breathe in, that help us feel our best.

Wear with me

I’m not interested in reaching for my iron grey pants, sharp white shirt or towering court shoes. I’m proud of who I am and I want to wear the clothes that make me feel like the best version of myself. Confident, creative, strong. Some days that’s my comfiest jeans, other days that’s my brightest pants, frilliest shirt or craziest shoes. They’re my confidence, the strength I need to speak up or take on something new.

The high street is currently awash with bright tailoring pieces, embellished blazers and fun, new takes on the court shoe, so I suppose in some way the idea is catching on. More and more of us are ditching the clothes we once used as a bargaining chip into a “man’s world”. We’re branching out on our own. Creating a new kind of power dressing. A kind, that’s proud of who we are – whatever we are. It’s feminine, strong and completely our own.

After all, no one should ever be denied the satisfaction of a velvet platform or a pair of bright pink trousers…
